Hattie couldn’t believe such pretty little creatures were capable of causing so much trouble and she was tempted to go with them as they gently tugged at her clothes and hair, in the direction of the Fairy Forest. However, looking at Mith Ickle’s wary expression and remembering the unicorn’s warning, she smiled back at them but walked firmly on.

Hattie was just starting to wonder when they would reach the end of the forest when, at last, she glimpsed the foot of the Rumbling Volcano. Hattie could see the steaming mountain rising up in front of them, but the path to it was blocked by a bridge that was guarded by a solid line of six very unfriendly looking trolls. She felt Mith Ickle settle nervously on her shoulder as she walked towards them, her chest thumping with fear at their glaring eyes.

‘STOP!’ bellowed the shortest of the trolls before Hattie had taken more than a few steps. ‘Only a true Guardian can cross this bridge and approach the Rumbling Volcano. And her friend, I suppose,’ he added, pointing a chubby, long-nailed finger in the direction of Mith Ickle.

‘Answer this riddle and prove your worth,’ said another of the trolls, this one a large, chunky creature. He removed a scroll from his pocket and, with grubby fingers ending in bitten nails, slowly unrolled it and read aloud.

‘To show you are a Guardian true,

Reveal a jewel from the sky so blue.’
